The Opportunity

The Chief Investment Officer (CIO) is responsible for optimizing the investment performance of the endowment in order to support the substantial ambitions of Georgetown University. The CIO has primary responsibility for investment policy, asset allocation, rebalancing, manager evaluation and selection, board communications, and investment reporting. In directing the investment function, the CIO will demonstrate leadership and initiative, be collaborative yet decisive, and exercise excellent communication skills. The CIO will bring breadth of knowledge across asset classes and a well-developed understanding of portfolio construction, risk management and the capital markets. Most importantly, the CIO will lead Georgetown in achieving top quartile performance for the endowment.

The CIO will provide leadership to a staff of five, serve as a lead ambassador for the institution, and work closely with leaders within the Georgetown community (Chief Financial Officer, Board of Directors, Chief Operating Officer, Office of Advancement, Office of the President, Office of Communications, Deans of Schools, and others). The CIO will collaborate with and maintain effective communications with the President and key members of the university administration. Georgetown’s portfolio is structured around high-quality managers with proven track records, particularly in alternative investments, and long-standing relationships with the university. The new CIO will have the opportunity to build on a strong foundation of managers while also working with the Board to shape the portfolio going forward.
